Association of opioids with incisional ocular surgery
JAMA Ophthalmology Sep 27, 2019
Kolomeyer AM, et al. - In this cohort study, researchers described rates of filled opioid prescriptions after incisional ocular surgeries. Participants in the study were patients with incisional ocular surgeries within a large national US insurer’s administrative medical claims database. From January 2000 through December 2016, all incisional ocular surgeries were assessed. To determine ORs of filling an opioid prescription, multivariate logistic regression using generalized estimating equations was used. In total, 2,407,962 incisional ocular surgeries were involved, of which 45,776 were linked to an opioid prescription. The authors discovered a rising trend of filled opioid prescriptions over the course of all years studied (2000-2016). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that year of surgery was significantly linked to filling an opioid prescription, with the highest odds in 2014, 2015, and 2016 vs 2000 to 2001. The rate of filled opioid prescriptions was affected by race/ethnicity, education, yearly income and geographic location. Further research may be warranted to investigate the trend identified in this investigation of increasing rates of filled perioperative opioid prescriptions.
