Association of opioid prescribing patterns with prescription opioid overdose in adolescents and young adults

JAMA Pediatrics Feb 07, 2020

Chua KP, et al. - Among 2,752,612 adolescents and young adults (mean [SD] age at cohort entry, 17.2 [2.5] years) without cancer, researchers conducted this claims-based cohort study to detect opioid prescribing patterns correlated with prescription opioid overdose. An increased risk of overdose was associated with daily dosage of opioids, concurrent use of benzodiazepine, and extended-release or long-acting use of opioids. Practitioners could potentially mitigate overdose risk when prescribing opioids to adolescents and young adults by using the lowest effective daily dosage, avoiding concurrent opioid and benzodiazepine prescribing, and focusing on short-acting opioids. Results are broadly consistent with prior studies of opioid safety aimed at older adults.
