Association of opioid overdose with opioid prescriptions to family members
JAMA Internal Medicine Sep 07, 2019
Khan NF, et al. - Researchers examined how opioid prescriptions to family members are related to overdose among individuals who themselves do not have an opioid prescription. They used healthcare utilization data from 2004 through 2015 from a large US commercial insurance company to conduct this 1:4 matched case-control study. Outcomes suggest 2.89-fold higher odds of an individual overdose in relation to prior opioid dispensing to family members, which persisted in young children and increased with greater quantities of opioid medications dispensed to family members. Findings thereby support the value of family member prescriptions as a risk factor for overdose.
