Association of obesity with severity outcomes in hospitalized pediatric asthma exacerbations
Journal of Asthma Oct 03, 2020
Parlar-Chun R, Truong G, Isbell T, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is a connection between obesity and severity outcomes like hospital length of stay, intensive care admissions, and the need for continuous albuterol or magnesium administration. Patients 4 to 17 years old admitted between January 1, 2012, and January 1, 2016, with asthma identified by discharge codes have been reviewed. Clinical data like age, gender, family history of asthma, use of controller medication along with outcome data like the length of stay, ICU admission, use of continuous albuterol, and use of magnesium have been obtained. Overall, 995 patients met the requirements for inclusion. There is no correlation between obesity and outcomes of length of stay, ICU admission, or magnesium administration. Although growing evidence links obesity with asthma, the research indicates it may not be correlated with the severity of exacerbation.
