Association of nurse workload with missed nursing care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

JAMA Nov 17, 2018

Tubbs-Cooley HL, et al. - In this study of 136 nurses caring for 418 infants during 332 shifts, researchers investigated how Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse workload is associated with missed nursing care. They observed increased missed nursing care in about half of the measured missed care items in association with increased infant-to-nurse ratio during a shift. This suggests a significant association of the workload of NICU nurses with missed nursing care and indicates a particular significance of subjective workload ratings. They identified that despite high potential for intervention, subjective workload, an important aspect of nurse workload, remains largely unmeasured.
