Association of nurse workload with missed nursing care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
JAMA Pediatrics Jan 10, 2019
Tubbs-Cooley HL, et al. - In this study of 136 nurses caring for 418 infants during 332 shifts, researchers examined how Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse workload is associated with missed nursing care. Using a prospective design, they evaluated relationships between shift-level workload of individual nurses and missed care for assigned infants from March 1, 2013, through January 31, 2014, at a 52-bed level IV NICU in a Midwestern academic medical center. They found increased missed nursing care in about half of the measured missed care items in association with increased infant-to-nurse ratio during a shift. This suggests a significant association of the workload of NICU nurses with missed nursing care and indicates a particular significance of subjective workload ratings. They identified that despite high potential for intervention, subjective workload, an important aspect of nurse workload, remains largely unmeasured.
