Association of no promotion of homosexuality laws and electronic cigarette use disparities for sexual minority youth
JAMA Pediatrics Oct 12, 2019
Wille L, et al. - The correlation of no promotion of homosexuality laws and electronic cigarette use variations for sexual minority youth were explored by the researchers. Although US sexual minority laws have advanced in recent years, many state laws can still foster environments that can promote disparities in health. As of March 2019, 7 US states (Texas, Arizona, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi) with nearly nine million public school students have laws explicitly banning positive depictions of sexual minority people or nonheterosexual activities in public school education (no promotion of homosexuality [NPH] laws). Current school climate studies have shown that the presence of NPH laws in a state is related to a higher probability that students with sexual minority status will encounter harassment or assault at school. Therefore, NPH laws can highlight and promote school environments that heighten stress for these adolescents.
