Association of no promotion of homosexuality laws and electronic cigarette use disparities for sexual minority youth

JAMA Sep 02, 2019

Wille L, et al. - Experts ascertained the correlation of no promotion of homosexuality laws and electronic cigarette use variations for sexual minority youth. However US laws relative to sexual minorities have developed in recent years, many state laws may still nurture environments that can promote health differences. As of March 2019, 7 US states (Texas, Arizona, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi) with nearly nine million public school students have laws explicitly banning positive depictions of sexual minority people or nonheterosexual activities in public school education (no promotion of homosexuality [NPH] laws). Current school climate studies have exhibited that the presence of NPH laws in a state is related to a higher probability that students with sexual minority status will encounter harassment or assault at school. Therefore, NPH laws may highlight and promote school environments that heighten stress for these adolescents.
