Association of neuraxial anesthesia with postoperative venous thromboembolism after noncardiac surgery: A propensity-matched analysis of ACS-NSQIP database
Anesthesia & Analgesia Feb 26, 2019
Turan A, et al. - Whether neuraxial anesthesia attenuates the incidence of 30-day venous thromboembolism (VTE) as well as 30-day readmission, 30-day mortality, and the duration of postoperative hospitalization in adults recovering from orthopedic surgery, was investigated. Participants were from American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database (2011–2015) and comprised adults who had inpatient orthopedic surgeries lasting more than 1 hour with either neuraxial or general anesthesia. Using propensity score matching, groups were matched 1:1 for appropriate confounders. Findings revealed decreased odds of 30-day VTE as well as reduced 30-day readmission in association with the use of neuraxial anesthesia. Overall, only weak VTE prophylaxis was provided by neuraxial anesthesia but it could be used in high-risk patients as an adjuvant to current thromboprophylaxis.
