Association of neonatal inflammatory markers and perinatal stroke subtypes
Neurology® Sep 04, 2020
Mineyko A, Nettel-Aguirre A, de Jesus P, et al. - In this population-based, controlled cohort study with prospective and retrospective case ascertainment, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between neonatal inflammatory cytokines and perinatal stroke using a systems biology approach analyzing serum and blood-spot cytokines from 47 patients. Candidates were selected through the Alberta Perinatal Stroke Project. In total, 197 candidates were analyzed (27 with NAIS, 8 with APPIS, 12 with PVI, 150 controls). Findings suggested an association of unique inflammatory biomarker signatures with specific perinatal stroke diseases. The results support acquired pathophysiology and indicate the likelihood that at-risk pregnancies may be detected in order to establish preventive strategies.
