Association of mortality among trauma patients taking preinjury direct oral anticoagulants vs vitamin K antagonists
Surgery Aug 24, 2019
LaDuke ZJ, et al. - Researchers investigated how preinjury anticoagulation or antiplatelet therapy influences outcomes after trauma. Drom the Michigan Trauma Quality Improvement Program, they included data of 115,042 trauma patients; of these, 23,196 patients were on antiplatelet therapy, 3,855 on warfarin, 1,893 on warfarin + antiplatelet agent, 1,306 on a direct oral anticoagulant, and 717 patients on direct oral anticoagulant + antiplatelet therapy. Patients on preinjury antiplatelet, warfarin, or warfarin + antiplatelet therapy were observed to be at higher risk of mortality. They did not identify statistically increased risk for mortality among patients on a direct oral anticoagulant only.
