Association of metabolic–bariatric surgery with long-term survival in adults with and without diabetes: A one-stage meta-analysis of matched cohort and prospective controlled studies with 174,772 participants
The Lancet May 28, 2021
Syn NL, Cummings DE, Wang LZ, et al. - This prespecified one-stage meta-analysis was conducted to compare long-term survival results of severely obese patients who underwent metabolic–bariatric surgery vs usual care. Relevant randomised trials, prospective controlled studies, and matched cohort studies were identified from PubMed, Scopus, and MEDLINE (via Ovid). Researchers also explored grey literature by reviewing bibliographies of included studies as well as review articles. They found 1,470 articles, of which, 16 matched cohort studies and one prospective controlled trial were finally analyzed. According to findings, substantially lower all-cause mortality rates and longer life expectancy were observed in relation to metabolic–bariatric surgery, vs usual obesity management, among adults with obesity. Much more prominent survival advantages were reported for participants with preexisting diabetes vs those without.
