Association of medication adherence and clinical outcomes in sarcoidosis
Chest Feb 12, 2020
Sharp M, et al. - In view of the significant health disparities in correlation to sarcoidosis, one of the most common interstitial lung diseases, researchers here examined the relationship between medication adherence and clinical outcomes in sarcoidosis. They enrolled 117 adult patients (57% female, 55% African American, the median age of 57 years old) in the Johns Hopkins Sarcoidosis Clinic diagnosed with pulmonary sarcoidosis on treatment. They identified this work being the first observational study on medication adherence in sarcoidosis. At least one non-adherent behavior was reported in 66% of individuals within the cohort. Better HRQoL was reported in correlation with higher medication adherence. African Americans showed a higher likelihood of reporting non-adherence. Hence for improving patient-reported outcomes and health disparities in sarcoidosis, medication adherence seems to be a valuable target.
