Association of maternal prepregnancy weight with offspring adiposity throughout adulthood over 37 years of follow-up
Obesity Jan 18, 2019
Schoppa I, et al. - In a large, well-phenotyped, prospective study, researchers assessed the link between maternal pregnancy weight and offspring BMI over adulthood from nearly 40 years of follow-up. Between 1971 and 2008, BMI was measured in Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort participants. Adult offspring exposed to maternal prepregnancy overweight or obesity had higher BMI (0.8-3.1 kg/m2) and odds of obesity (OR 2.6-4.9) than non-exposed offspring. Findings suggested an association of maternal prepregnancy weight with greater offspring BMI throughout adulthood, with faster weight gain in early and midadulthood. After adjusting to the inherited genetic predisposition to obesity and measuring lifestyle factors (physical activity, diet, smoking and education), the association endured.
