Association of maternal prepregnancy diabetes and gestational diabetes mellitus with congenital anomalies of the newborn
Diabetes Care Oct 26, 2020
Wu Y, Liu B, Sun Y, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the correlation of maternal prepregnancy diabetes, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and 12 subtypes of congenital anomalies of the newborn. Among 29,211,974 live births documented in the National Vital Statistics System in the US from 2011 to 2018, 90,061 infants were identified to have congenital anomalies at birth. Analysis revealed association of prepregnancy diabetes and, to a lesser extent, of GDM with several subtypes of congenital anomalies of the newborn. Based on findings, they suggest preconception counseling as potentially advantageous in women with preexisting diabetes or at risk for GDM for the prevention of congenital anomalies.
