Association of maternal attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and preterm birth: A cohort study
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology May 13, 2020
Hesselman S, Wikman A, Skoglund C, et al. - As 3%–7% of women of childbearing age are affected by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), researchers here performed a national register‐based cohort study examining the link between ADHD and risk of preterm birth (< 37 weeks). Women dispensed with at least one prescription for ADHD medication, were considered to have ADHD. Among 377,381 nulliparous women who gave birth to singleton infants from 2007 to 2014, 6,327 (1.7%) had ADHD. Observations revealed an increased risk of preterm birth among women with ADHD. They observed particular association of ADHD with very (< 32 weeks) preterm births; the associations were seen with both spontaneous and medically indicated onsets.
