Association of mast cell burden and TIM-3 expression with recalcitrant chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Feb 17, 2021

Belsky MA, Corredera E, Banerjee H, et al. - In patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), higher polyp mast cell load is reported to be linked with worse postoperative endoscopic appearance in previous work. Researchers here followed CRSwNP patients postoperatively in order to determine whether mast cell burden or TIM-3 expression among mast cells is predictive of recalcitrant disease. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) was conducted to obtain nasal polyp specimens and their separation was done into epithelial and stromal layers via enzymatic digestion. They studied overall 23 patients with CRSwNP and followed them for 6 months after undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Findings suggest that a more refractory postoperative course for CRSwNP patients may be predicted via assessing mast cell load in polyp epithelium and stroma. Uncertainty remains concerning the role of TIM-3 in the chronic inflammatory state seen in CRSwNP.
