Association of macular visual field measurements measures with glaucoma staging systems
JAMA Ophthalmology Feb 19, 2019
De Moraes CS, et al. - Researchers performed a cross-sectional study of 57 participants with eyes manifesting glaucoma and 24-2 mean deviation (MD) better than −6 dB, to determine if current glaucoma staging systems underestimate glaucoma severity by not detecting macular damage. About 70% of eyes with confirmed macular damage were classified as having early glaucoma using the main glaucoma severity staging systems. Outcomes thereby support a possible underestimation of severity with current glaucoma staging systems when not including 10-2 visual fields and high-resolution macular imaging in assessments of macular damage. Glaucoma severity staging could be enhanced via new systems using macular measurements (from 10-2 and optical coherence tomography results).
