Association of lung and heart dose with survival in patients with non-small cell lung cancer underwent volumetric modulated arc therapy

Cancer Management and Research Jul 10, 2019

Shen L, et al. - In this retrospective review, researchers studied non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients (n=130, median age of 63 years) who had received volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), to determine the association of lung and heart dosimetric parameters with overall survival (OS) in these subjects. The participants had received a mean heart and lung dose of 14.8±8.5 Gy and 13.6±4.4 Gy, respectively. Findings revealed an association of radiation pneumonitis and heart V15 with OS for patients with stage III NSCLC who underwent VMAT. In addition, a high correlation was evident between heart and lung dosimetric parameters, recommending equally considering sparing of heart and lung during the treatment planning.
