Association of lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol with contemporary lipid-lowering therapies and risk of diabetes mellitus: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of the American Heart Association Mar 28, 2019
Khan SU, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers explored the connection between lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) with contemporary lipid-lowering therapies and incident diabetes mellitus (DM). Over 160,000 nondiabetic participants were randomized to lipid-lowering therapies that were either more intensive (n=83,123) or less intensive (n=80,565). The investigators noted an association of more intensive lipid-lowering therapy with a higher risk of incident DM vs less intensive therapy. No independent association was found between the reduction in LDL-C and incident DM among intensive lipid-lowering therapies.
