Association of long-term child growth and developmental outcomes with metformin vs insulin treatment for gestational diabetes
JAMA Pediatrics Feb 10, 2019
Landi SN, et al. - In this population-based cohort study, researchers evaluated the association of treating gestational diabetes (GDM) with metformin vs insulin with child growth and development. In this study of New Zealand, women treated with metformin or insulin for GDM from 2005 to 2012 and their children were included. Pregnancies with evidence of diabetes and deliveries were excluded before 2013. In children of insulin-treated vs metformin-treated mothers, no observe significant differences in child weight, weight for height or body mass index were observed, and no differences in the results of behavioral assessments were noted. In growth and developmental evaluations, children of metformin-treated mothers were indistinguishable from those of insulin-treated mothers.
