Association of left ventricular hypertrophy with cognitive decline and dementia risk over 20 years: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities - Neurocognitive Study (ARIC-NCS)

American Heart Journal Jul 18, 2018

Norby FL, et al. - In the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, researchers investigated the link between left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and risk of dementia and cognitive function. Participants of this population-based study were 12,665 individuals (23% black race, 56% female, mean age 57) who attended visit 2 in 1990–92. Using a Cox model, they determined the link between time-dependent LVH and dementia adjusted for time-varying covariates from 1990–2013. To evaluate LVH with cognitive function, they used linear regression models fit with generalized estimating equations. They found an increased risk of incident dementia related to LVH measured during mid-life. However, no association of LVH with additional cognitive decline was observed. To prevent subclinical brain injury, findings emphasize the need for hypertension control.
