Association of kidney transplant center volume with 3-year clinical outcomes
American Journal of Kidney Diseases May 10, 2019
Sonnenberg EM, et al. - Because a robust link between procedure volume and clinical outcomes has been shown across many surgical fields, researchers performed this retrospective cohort study to evaluate the link between center volume and 3-year clinical outcomes for contemporary kidney transplantation. They looked for the existence of this link in diabetic recipients, older recipients (aged ≥65 years), and recipients of high kidney donor profile index ≥ 85 kidneys. They found little evidence that better adjusted outcomes for kidney transplant recipients can be achieved, even in those anticipated to carry an increased risk for graft failure or mortality, in relation to care in higher volume centers.
