Association of intermittent and constant knee pain patterns with knee pain severity, radiographic knee osteoarthritis duration and severity
Arthritis Care & Research Mar 26, 2020
Carlesso LC, Hawker GA, Torner, et al. - This multicenter osteoarthritis study seeks to analyze the relation of knee pain patterns to pain severity, and to radiographic osteoarthritis (OA) severity and duration. Researchers conducted a longitudinal cohort study involving older adults with or at risk of knee OA. Applying the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index pain subscale and the Visual Analog Scale, knee pain severity was measured. Utilizing regression models with generalized estimating equations, they tested the relation of intermittent and constant OA pain patterns to knee pain severity, radiographic knee OA (ROA) severity, and ROA duration. A sum of 2,322 individuals were included in this study (mean age 68.8, BMI 31.0 kg/m2, 60% female). The results of this study demonstrated that knee pain patterns are correlated with radiographic disease stage and duration, as well as pain severity, indicating that pain patterns are important for understanding symptomatic disease progression.
