Association of interindividual variation in plasma oxytocin with postcesarean incisional pain

Anesthesia & Analgesia Sep 27, 2019

Ende HB, et al. - Researchers focused on the link between plasma oxytocin and postcesarean incisional pain in this pilot study including 18 patients undergoing elective cesarean delivery. They obtained plasma samples from the participants at 1 hour preoperatively and 1 and 24 hours postoperatively and analyzed these samples by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. They evaluated pain at 1 day, 8 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months postoperatively. Findings revealed an inverse correlation of incisional pain at 24 hours with 1- and 24-hour oxytocin levels; higher plasma oxytocin was found to be related to lower pain.
