Association of intensive care unit delirium with sleep disturbance and functional disability after critical illness: An observational cohort study
Annals of Intensive Care May 16, 2018
Altman MT, et al. - In this observational cohort study, researchers determined the prevalence of self-reported post-intensive care unit (ICU) sleep disturbance and increased functional disability, and their link with medical intensive care unit (MICU) delirium and other ICU factors. Sleep disturbance was defined as a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score > 5 and increased disability as an increase in composite basic activities of daily living (BADL)/instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) score at follow-up relative to baseline. Total days of MICU delirium were found to be significantly related to increased post-discharge sleep disturbance after adjusting for important covariates. Delirium incidence showed a trend toward association with increased functional disability in the year following discharge.
