Bikdeli B, et al. - Using three distinct statistical approaches, investigators determined the relationship between use of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters and mortality rates in Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) beneficiaries with acute pulmonary embolism (PE), a common cause of morbidity and mortality in older adults. The US Food and Drug Administration has raised concerns over the safety of IVC filters in recent years, and some studies have shown a temporary reduction in the use of this technology. In the meantime, some researchers have found that the use of IVC filters was related to reduced mortality rates, using administrative data with limited adjustments, and recommended their use.
