Association of infant temperament with subsequent obesity in young children of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus
JAMA Pediatrics May 09, 2019
Faith MS, et al. - For children born to mothers who experienced gestational diabetes mellitus, researchers prospectively assessed infant temperament in conjunction with overweight and obesity status at 2 to 5 years of age. In this cohort study involving 382 mother-infant pairs, elevated soothability was linked to early childhood risk of obesity among this high-risk infant population, possibly in part because caregivers use sugar drinks to assist infants. Soothability temperament can be a novel screening target for early intervention in obesity prevention involving the regulation of responsive feeding and emotion. Lower odds of obesity, independent of infant temperament and other covariates, were associated with increased breastfeeding intensity and duration (12-month combined).
