Association of increased youth suicides in the United States with the release of 13 Reasons Why
JAMA Sep 13, 2019
Niederkrotenthaler T, Stack S, Sinyor M, et al. – In this time series analysis, researchers investigated whether suicide rates increased following the release of Netflix’s US series 13 Reasons Why. From the CDC’s Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database, they obtained monthly suicide data for age groups 10-19 years, 20-29 years, and ≥ 30 years for both US males and females from January 1, 1999, to December 31, 2017. The target audience of 10- to 19-year-old individuals showed an immediate increase in suicides in the 3 months following the show’s release, which was beyond the generally increasing trend. According to age- and sex-specific models, the association with suicide mortality was restricted to 10- to 19-year-old individuals, and females had stronger proportional increases. The researchers noted that these findings emphasize the need for safer and more thoughtful portrayal of suicide in the media.
