Association of increased safe household firearm storage with firearm suicide and unintentional death among US youths
JAMA May 21, 2019
Monuteaux MC, et al. - In this modeling study using Monte Carlo simulation, researchers estimated the decline in youth firearm suicide and unintentional firearm mortality that would result if more adults in households with youth stored household guns locked. According to findings, 6% to 32% of youth firearm deaths (by suicide and unintended firearm injury) could be prevented, depending on the likelihood of an intervention motivating adults who do not currently lock all household firearms to lock all guns in their home. Overall, the investigators suggested that approaches to safely store firearms can prevent up to 32% of firearm deaths by motivating adults living in homes with youth.
