Association of hyperlipidemia with breast cancer in Bangladeshi women
Lipids in Health and Disease May 28, 2021
Chowdhury FA, Prova MT, Khatun M, et al. - Among Bangladeshi women, the link between abnormal plasma lipids and breast cancer risk was investigated in this case-control study with a sample of 150 women (50 women in each group). Researchers compared lipid levels of women with breast cancer with those of females with benign breast disease (control group 1) and healthy women (control group 2). Significantly higher incidence of dyslipidemia was detected in breast cancer patients (96%) compared with that in healthy women (84%) and patients with benign breast disease (82%). Breast cancer patients had significantly higher levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, vs both benign breast disease patients and healthy women, except for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. In this study’s population of Bangladeshi women, breast cancer risk was shown to be independently predicted by total cholesterol as well as by BMI.
