Association of hospital volume with laryngectomy outcomes in patients with larynx cancer
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jan 23, 2019
Gourin CG, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, investigators assessed 45,156 cases at 5,516 hospitals to examine the relationship between hospital volume and consequences for laryngectomy and also to see if reduced odds of in-hospital mortality, postoperative surgical complexities, and acute medical complications were linked with high-volume hospitals in the top-volume quintile (>28 cases per year). A negative correltion was recognized between very high-volume hospital care and the mean incremental length of hospitalization, as well as hospital-related costs. They suggested an association of laryngectomy outcomes with hospital volume; reduced morbidity was related to minimum hospital volume threshold and costs with higher hospital volume.
