Association of high miR-182 levels with low-risk prostate cancer

American Journal of Pathology Feb 23, 2019

Baumann B, et al. - Given that aggressive disease develops among a subset of men with prostate cancer, researchers investigated if miR-182 is associated with biochemical recurrence and aggressive disease. Performing in situ hybridization of two prostate tissue microarrays and laser-capture microdissection of prostate epithelium, they observed significantly higher miR-182 in cancer epithelium than adjacent benign epithelium. In a multivariate logistic regression model, observations suggested an inverse association of the ratio of cancer to benign miR-182 expression per patient with recurrence. Despite the higher level of expression of miR-182 in localized prostate cancer, lower expression levels were evident in aggressive cancers, indicating that this miRNA has a biphasic role that could be employed for prognostic and/or therapeutic purposes to reduce prostate cancer progression.
