Association of high birth weight with overweight and obesity in Chinese students aged 6–18 years: A national, cross-sectional study in China
BMJ Open May 30, 2019
Zou Z, et al. - Using baseline survey data from seven provinces in China, the association of high birth weight (HBW) with overweight and obesity was evaluated by researchers in Chinese students (aged 6–18). Participants in the study were 9962 students, including 4981 students in the HBW group and 4981 students in the normal birth weight (NBW) group. HBW participants in childhood revealed higher body mass index. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in the HBW group was significantly higher than in the NBW group, and the results in all age groups except age 6–7, age 14–15 and age 16–18 were similar for overweight. In addition, after covariate adjustment, HBW was positively linked to overweight and obesity. Overall, the authors concluded that HBW results in an increased risk of childhood overweight and obesity. Therefore, birth weight control measures, such as control of gestational weight gain, should be taken from the earliest start of life.
