Thomi R, et al. - Authors sought to illustrate the importance of the type 1/type 17 immune response in lesional hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) skin by drawing a semantic connectivity map. A clustering of all T helper 1/T helper 17 (T_H1/T_H17)-associated cytokines (interleukin 17 [IL-17], interferon γ, IL-12, IL-23, IL-32, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor) around overall lesional inflammation was seen in the map. They noted that, via interferon γ, tumor necrosis factor, IL-12, and IL-17 were directly connected. On the contrary, an inverse correlation between IL-13, a T_H2-associated cytokine, and the presence of T_H1/T_H17-associated cytokines was seen, further highlighting the importance of the T_H1/T_H17 cytokines in HS pathogenesis. As per the data, HS could be a T_H1/T_H17-driven inflammatory skin disease.
