Association of hidradenitis suppurativa with inflammatory bowel disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Sep 18, 2019
Chen WT, et al. - Via a systematic review and meta-analysis comprising five case-control studies, two cross-sectional studies, and one cohort study with a total of 93,601 unique individuals with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS, a chronic, inflammatory, recurrent, debilitating skin disease of the hair follicle that usually presents following puberty with painful, deep-seated, inflamed lesions in the apocrine gland–bearing areas of the body, most generally the axillary, inguinal, and anogenital regions) who had 2.12-fold raised odds for Crohn disease and 1.51-fold increased odds for ulcerative colitis, researchers examined the correlation between HS and IBD. The meta-analysis of case-control and cross-sectional studies explicated important relations of HS with Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis. Two case-control studies discovered a notable correlation of HS with IBD. One cohort study observed a heightened risk of IBD in patients with HS. Thus, the evidence to date supports a correlation of HS with IBD. These results imply that consultation with gastroenterologists should be queried when patients with HS present with recurrent abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, bloody stool, and body weight loss.
