Association of heart failure with outcomes among patients with peripheral artery disease: Insights from EUCLID
Journal of the American Heart Association Jun 04, 2021
Samsky MD, Hellkamp A, Hiatt WR, et al. - Since risk factors related to new‐onset heart failure (HF) in patients with primary peripheral artery disease (PAD) are not revealed, and it is not known how the presence of HF is related to outcomes in patients with PAD, thus, researchers assessed risk associations of HF on results in patients with symptomatic PAD randomized to ticagrelor or clopidogrel as component of the EUCLID (Examining Use of Ticagrelor in Peripheral Arterial Disease) trial. Experts applied Cox models to ascertain the link of HF with outcomes. They found a high rate of coronary artery disease as well as a high risk for major adverse cardiovascular events and death among patients suffering from PAD and HF. Age ≥66, diabetes mellitus, and weight were revealed as features that were related to HF development. Thus, the likely requirement for aggressive treatment of (recurrent) atherosclerotic disease in PAD, particularly in HF cases, is supported by the findings.
