Association of head and neck cancer with mental health disorders in a large insurance claims database
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery May 08, 2019
Lee JH, et al. - In patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), researchers characterized the prevalence of mental health disorders (MHDs) and the possible links with survival and recurrence using a large insurance claims database. The most common type 0f cancers were oral cavity cancers, followed by oropharynx and larynx cancers. The proportion of mental health disorders was 29.9% vs 20.6% before the cancer diagnosis in this cohort study of 52,641 subjects with a diagnosis of HNC. The most likely to be diagnosed with MHD were women and patients with tobacco and alcohol history. Patients with HNC are associated with an increased prevalence of MHDs after treatment vs the general population.
