Association of haptoglobin phenotype with incident acute myocardial infarction in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes

Cardiovascular Diabetology Jun 06, 2019

Gurung RL, et al. - Using the Singapore Study of Macro-angiopathy and Micro-vascular Reactivity in Type 2 Diabetes (SMART2D) and Diabetic Nephropathy (DN) cohorts, researchers examined Chinese type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients (SMART2D; N=1,034, mean age of 59 and DN: N=1,290, mean age: 58 years) to assess the risk of incident acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in relation to haptoglobin (Hp) phenotype (Hp 1-1, 2-1 and 2-2) in these subjects. In this prospective study, they found an increased risk of incident AMI in relation to Hp 1-1 phenotype, and this was independent of traditional risk factors. A T2D population at higher risk for onset of AMI may be identified via Hp phenotyping.
