Association of gout and depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry | Sep 21, 2017
Lin S, et al. - The association between gout and depression was investigated in this systematic review. In this meta-analysis, the clinicians found a positive relationship between gout and depression. To examine the causality between gout and depression, further large-scale prospective cohort studies were required.
Methods- The clinicians identified published articles through a comprehensive review of PUBMED and EMBASE.
- They analyzed data from studies reporting relative risks, odds ratios, or hazard ratios comparing the risk of depression among participants who had gout vs. those without gout.
- They used a random-effect model to calculate pooled odds ratios and 95% confident intervals (CI).
- Seven studies aligned with the inclusion criteria, which included 411745 participants and were included in the meta-analysis.
- Pooled analysis demonstrated a relationship between gout and depression, with an odds ratio of 1.19 (95%CI, 1.11, 1.29; I2 = 60.2%).
- Adjusted (or not) by study type or study quality, subgroup-analysis demonstrated a statistically significant association of gout and depression in all subgroups.
- Sensitivity analysis by 1-study removed analysis confirmed the robustness of the results, excluding articles of self-reported gout assessment or male-only.
