Association of glucose levels in pregnancy with use of health care services
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice May 10, 2019
Vesco KK, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers ascertained if women with abnormal gestational diabetes (GDM) screening test results short of GDM have increased health-services utilization vs women with normal outcomes. They performed this investigation among 29,999 women registered in Kaiser Permanente Northwest who completed GDM screening (two-step method:1-hour, 50-gram glucose-challenge test [GCT]; 3-hour, 100-gram oral-glucose-tolerance test [OGTT]). Rates for obstetrical ultrasound, noninvasive and invasive antenatal testing and ambulatory visits to the Department of Obstetrics were significantly higher among women with abnormal OGTT vs women with normal GCT. Even among women without GDM, study results show the utilization of health services increased with the resulting severity of glucose.
