Association of gait speed and grip strength with risk of cardiovascular events in patients on haemodialysis: A prospective study
BMC Nephrology Jun 06, 2019
Kuki A, et al. - Among patients (n=182) with end-stage renal disease undergoing haemodialysis (HD), researchers assessed if assessment of gait speed (GS) and handgrip strength (HGS) could be related to the onset of fatal/non-fatal cardiovascular (CV) events. Patients with physical disability, inability to walk without help, or had recently experienced CV events were excluded. They reported the occurrence of 46 CV events during the follow-up of the participants. They found a significant association of both physical performance factors with CV events. Fatal/non-fatal CV events could be independently predicted by slow GS and weak HGS in patients on HD.
