Association of Friday school report card release with Saturday incidence rates of agency-verified physical child abuse
JAMA Pediatrics Feb 09, 2019
Bright MA, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers analyzed the temporal relationship between school report card release and incidence rates (IRs) of physical abuse. From September 8, 2015, to May 30, 2016, data were collected in a 265-day window in the 64 of 67 Florida counties with available report card release dates. Participants included all children between the ages of 5 and 11 who received calls. In the study period in the 64 counties, a total of 1943 verified cases of physical abuse were reported. The release of report cards from Monday to Thursday was not related to increased incidence rates of child physical abuse the same day or the day after the release. However, on Saturdays after the release of a Friday report card, almost a 4-fold increase in the incidence rate of verified child physical abuse reports was found. For any other day of the week, no significant association of report card release with IRs has been found. This association of the release of school reports and physical abuse seems to illustrate a unique prevention system-based opportunity.
