Association of freezing of gait with nigral iron accumulation in patients with Parkinson's disease
Journal of the Neurological Sciences Sep 28, 2017
Naduthota RM, et al. - The clinicians examined whether patients with and without freezing of gait (FOG) in Parkinson's disease (PD) presented with differences in iron accumulation in substantia nigra using R2* relaxometry. They found higher nigral iron content in FOG (+) than FOG (-) and healthy controls (HCs). Furthermore, in Substantia Nigra pars compacta (SNc), they observed a positive correlation of FOG score with iron accumulation. Outcomes of this study underscored possible role of higher nigral iron content in the pathogenesis of FOG in PD.
