Association of frailty and sex with wait list mortality in liver transplant candidates in the Multicenter Functional Assessment in Liver Transplantation (FrAILT) Study
JAMA Jan 06, 2021
Lai JC, Ganger DR, Volk ML, et al. - Among 1,405 adults (578 women and 827 men) with cirrhosis awaiting liver transplant without hepatocellular carcinoma, researchers sought to determine whether frailty contributes to the gap between women and men in mortality. According to this prospective cohort study, despite comparable liver disease severity, women showed worse frailty scores. In wait list mortality, frailty attenuated the known gender gap, mediating 13% of the gap. Women experienced a 34% greater risk of wait list mortality vs men in unadjusted regression. Such results established frailty as a novel factor associated with the gap in wait list mortality between women and men with cirrhosis awaiting liver transplant.
