European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Oct 24, 2020
Pérez-López FR, Ornat L, López-Baena MT, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the possible correlations between female genital mutilation (FGM) and female sexual dysfunction, dyspareunia and pelvic pain via performing a meta-analysis. From PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, African Index Medicus and Cochrane Library, they identified 15 studies (n = 6,672 participants) reporting on the outcomes of the 19-item Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). The meta-analysis of the total FSFI score suggested a SMD of -1.43 indicative of female sexual dysfunction. In addition, significantly lower scores were recorded for the six FSFI domains in women with FGM: SMDs for desire -0.62, arousal -0.88, lubrication -0.95, orgasm -1.07, satisfaction -0.96 and pain -0.48. Findings overall suggest correlation of FGM with serious alteration in female sexual function as assessed with the FSFI, globally and per domain.
