Association of feeding evaluation with frenotomy rates in infants with breastfeeding difficulties
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Sep 26, 2019
Caloway C, et al. - In this observational quality improvement study, researchers ascertained if infants referred for frenotomy to treat breastfeeding problems should undergo procedures after comprehensive feeding examination, during which the primary cause of feeding issues was identified, and targeted intervention was provided. This investigation followed mother-infant dyads between March and December of 2018 who were referred to our tertiary care center for the problem with breastfeeding. Participants in the study were 115 patients referred for a surgical division of the lingual frenum. Seventy-two patients subsequently did not undergo surgical procedures following the development of a program with feeding examination with a pediatric speech and language pathologist. Following a comprehensive feeding evaluation, most patients referred for ankyloglossia may benefit from alternative intervention strategies. In order to treat these children, close collaboration and the formation of multidisciplinary teams is imperative.
