Association of fatty liver index with the risk of incident cardiovascular disease and acute myocardial infarction
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Aug 03, 2018
Olubamwo OO, et al. - In the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study cohort, researchers examined the prospective relationships between fatty liver (as estimated by fatty liver index [FLI]) and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD), specifically acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Participants in the study were 1,205 middle-aged men free of CVD at baseline. Using multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models, the associations of baseline FLI with incident CVD and incident AMI were examined. Results of this study suggested that incident CVD can be predicted by FLI. It was noted, however, that interactions of metabolic factors impact the predictability of AMI using FLI. Physicians should be evaluating and monitoring people with FLI in the moderate to a high category for subclinical or overt cardiovascular (including coronary) disease.
