Association of extending hospital length of stay with reduced pediatric hospital readmissions
JAMA Pediatrics Feb 09, 2019
Gay JC, et al. - In view of the association of shorter index hospitalization length of stay (LOS) with a higher risk of hospital readmission for some conditions in adult patients, researchers explored the association between index hospitalization LOS and pediatric readmissions by capitalizing on the natural variation in LOS across patients and hospitals. For hospitalized patients, hospital readmission rates are widely used as a quality measure. Concerns about the quality of discharge care, including those patients discharged before they were adequately prepared to leave the hospital, are largely responsible for the attention given to hospital readmission. Children do not display this association, and further work is required to assess if specific pediatric conditions might benefit from increasing LOS.
