Association of exposure to diethylstilbestrol during pregnancy with multigenerational neurodevelopmental deficits

JAMA Pediatrics May 31, 2018

Kioumourtzoglou MA, et al. - In this cohort study, the researchers examined the potential consequences of exposure to diethylstilbestrol or DES across generations—specifically, third-generation neurodevelopment. Using self-reported health information, such as exposure to diethylstilbestrol during pregnancy and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis, forty-seven thousand, five hundred forty participants were enrolled in the ongoing Nurses’ Health Study II. According to the findings obtained, diethylstilbestrol exposure was associated with multigenerational neurodevelopmental deficits. They reported that the doses and potency level of environmental endocrine disruptors to which humans were exposed were lower than those of diethylstilbestrol, but the prevalence of such exposure and the possibility of cumulative action were potentially high and thus warrant consideration.
